Editing blue sky photos to perfection is deceptively tricky - especially if you are seeking natural-looking images that pack a punch!
Bluebird days are some of the hardest conditions to photograph and post-process.The harsh light and extremely high contrast of a sunny day will test the dynamic range of your camera, leaving little latitude for adjustments before things start to deteriorate.
Blue sky days look terrible when over-processed - highlights blow out, shadows look unnaturally light and and mid-tones go muddy. Then there are the colours... blue skies impart a 'cold' look to the non-sky portions of an image - but the moment colour temperature is warmed your beautiful blue sky takes on a sickly yellow appearance!
Editing beautiful blue sky landscape photographs in Lightroom requires a gentle hand and experience.
I have developed an extensive bag of tricks over the years that help me to restore the wonderful vibrance and 'feel' of a sunny day to my images. Almost all of these presets deal with land and sky separately - applying specialist adjustments to each region of the image - resulting in pleasing foregrounds that melt into vibrant blue skies.
Let your photos sing like a bluebird!
What kind of images will this work on?
These presets will work best with images made on blue sky days during the early morning and late afternoon - photos taken during the period spanning 2-3 hours either side of midday rarely produce pleasing results. Correctly exposed images (not blown out / over exposed) will respond best to these presets.
